All '62 AVRI's use an 11-hole 3-ply white pickguard with a full size metal shielding on the underside.  All '57 AVRI's use a 8-hole 1-ply white pickguard with a shielding only for the pots and switch.  It was not until 1998 that the white pickgaurds were replaced with mint green guards on both the '62 and '57 reissues.   Many early AVRI strats have the initials JC on the underside of the guard.  Many have said that this may stand for John Cruz, who is now a master builder at Fender's Custom Shop, but I have not been able to verify this.
